Gloves and safety: How to determine your proper glove size
When your job, occupation or hobby requires you to have proper hand protection; You need to make sure your hand protection is one that offers proper fit, is comfortable, and is a secure hand protection system.
Purchasing hand protection (gloves) that is too small or large can have very negative consequences for the user. First, ill fitting gloves can be uncomfortable, difficult to use and a hindrance to the user. Second, an improperly fitting glove can potentially put your safety or life at risk; therefore, it is important for the user to ensure that he or she has not only the proper hand protection for the job, but that it also fits properly.
Preventable accidents
One needs only to search the internet, go to the library or public records office to read about hundreds of thousands of industrial or job related accidents caused by improperly fitting or worse; missing work protection.
Here are a few examples of typical accident reports caused by improper protection.
1) "as a result of the accident the back of his hands were scorched… He was not wearing gloves."
2) "grasps copper cable with hand and is unable to let go."
3) "laborer gets pulled into cement mixing machine."
As we can see from our accident examples; many preventable work related accidents come from the improper use of work safety devices in the work place. Many times these work related injuries would have been easily prevented by the use of adequate safety rules and proper hand protection.
Like any safety device a glove needs to be of the proper size for the job. Gloves that are uncomfortable (too big, too small) can cause both physical and emotional stress to the worker. Physically, an ill fitting glove can limit your grip or compromise hand dexterity. Additionally, a glove that is too big can easily be caught in equipment or the user may decide to remove it and work with no hand protection.
Besides improper fit, many workers fall victim to defective equipment. Yes, defective hand protection can pose a significant work hazard to the user, co-workers or the general public. Why? A glove material that is old and weak may not offer the adequate protection that the user needs; for this reason gloves like any safety item must be checked for material fitness and condition. If a glove has cracks, cuts, or holes, it must be replaced to ensure adequate safety and use.
How do you ensure adequate hand protection?
The key to effective hand protection is the proper measuring of the hand. The correct measurement of the hand will ensure that the user has adequate hand protection.
How to determine correct glove size
To determine the correct glove size, you will want to measure the circumference around the palm area of your dominant hand with a tape measure. The dominant hand will be the right if you are right-handed and left if you are left-handed.
