What is an Epoxy?

An Epoxy AKA a polypoxide is basically a thermosetting polymer which is formed from a reaction of an epoxide "resin" with a hardener agent. Today, Epoxy has a wide range of uses and applications including general adhesion, reinforcement agent for plastic material and sealing applications.

The most common epoxy is traditionally produced from a reaction between epichlorohydrin and bisphenol-A. When these or similar materials are combined, the amine group react with the epoxide groups to form a strong covalent bond.

Epoxy Applications

Epoxy has been very popular and its uses is very extensive in industry and home. Epoxy applications include coatings, adhesives and many composite materials such as those used in carbon fiber and fiberglass reinforcement.

Traditionally, Epoxies are known for their excellent adhesion, chemical and heat resistance, excellent mechanical properties and their ESD properties. The flexibility of Epoxy is partially due to how easy it is to modify it's properties. This means Epoxy has found a home in applications needing high thermal insulation, and thermal conductivity combined withhigh electrical resistance for electronic applications.
